Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972, located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Scott was raised by her grandmother as an sole daughter by her grandmother. Scott went to The Philadelphia High School for Girls and after she graduated she was accepted into Temple University. There, Scott worked at two different jobs while studying secondary education. She planned to become an high school English teacher. After three years of being a teacher's aide and studying her goal of becoming a high-school English teacher came to a halt. A poet by trade started performing, she was able to perform in poetry performances live. Later, she joined forces along with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form the group. You Got Me was co-written by both. The singer was at the Roots performance. She then secured collaborations, which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. While on the Canada tour for The Broadway musical Rent the Musical, she gained valuable performance experience. She was the first artist to be signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
